Alex started Kindergarten today!
For some parents, this was a big day. It was their child’s first day of school ever. However, Alex has been in preschool for 2 ½ years prior to this so it ended up being more of a change in the school routine for him. He went from a half day of preschool to a full day of kindergarten. Instead of meeting his teacher at the entrance, he goes to his classroom by himself.
I could tell he was nervous when I dropped him off. He wanted me to go with him like the last few times we were there, but today was different (he knew the way, we made sure of that when we had the conference). He kept looking back at me as if asking “Am I doing this right?” In years past, he would meet up with his preschool teacher at the door and the class would all go back together. This was big step in independence for him in my opinion. A step towards growing up.
My biggest concern for him was lunch time. He is a picky eater. We have been working on that, but we still have a lot to work on. His school offers free breakfast and free lunch to all of the students. I didn’t pack him a lunch today because I wanted him to try new foods. After a while, I plan to start packing his lunch on days where it’s something he doesn’t like. But not yet. I found out that he only drank his chocolate milk and didn’t eat his food. I guess we will try again tomorrow.
The good thing is that at the end of the day, he said it was a good day. I just hope that he feels the same way as we near the end of the school year.
